BIO
Teresa Murray Amato, MD is the Chair of Emergency Medicine at LIJ-Forest Hills Hospital/Northwell Health and the Director of Geriatric Emergency Medicine for Northwell Health. Prior to this position, Dr. Amato was the Associate Chair of Emergency Medicine and the Director of the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) at Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Northwell Health. Dr. Amato's career in health care began when she attended nursing school at Columbia University. After receiving her BSN, she worked as an emergency department nurse while studying for her MSN. After completing her graduate nursing education, she worked as a geriatric nurse practitioner while continuing her nursing role in the emergency department. Furthering her education, she attended medical school at Downstate Medical Center and went on to complete a residency in emergency medicine at NYP Cornell/Columbia. She was able to combine her passions for both emergency care and geriatrics by completing a Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship at NYP Cornell. After graduation, Dr. Amato spent several years involved in physician and nursing education. Her first position at Northwell was as the Assistant Residency Program director for emergency medicine.
She is currently a member of Northwell Health Physician Partners Board of Governors and sits on the patient experience, physician engagement, wellness and on-boarding committees. She is also the current President of the Medical Staff Society at LIJ-Forest Hills Hospital.
Dr. Amato has been a champion of physician wellness. During her time as a chair of Emergency Medicine she has increased physician engagement and the patient experience though a program that assesses physician burnout biannually and addresses areas of concern in real time. In addition she helped spear head a patient experience task force for the department. Due to these initiatives, the department has consistently met and surpassed stretch goals for engagement and likelihood to recommend.
Working with the Northwell's Emergency Medicine Service Line and the Department of Geriatric and Palliative Care, Dr. Amato helped Northwell became the first and only health system in the United States to receive Geriatric Emergency Medicine Accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Amato has recently been named the Director of Geriatric Emergency Medicine for Northwell Health.
Dr. Amato has published research articles on the use of the CDU to: prevent 30 day readmissions in the elderly, diagnose diabetes and prediabetes in emergency department patients and the elimination of unnecessary admissions in patients with low- risk chest pain. In addition she has presented nationally on novel approaches to ED through-put and has done several speaking engagements focusing on women in leadership, feedback, physician wellness and burnout, and diversity and inclusion as well as geriatric emergency care.
