Dr. Schanler is a neonatologist and former Director of Neonatal Services and for the Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Cohen Children's Medical Center and Northwell Health in Long Island, New York. As of May 2021 he is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He has conducted numerous studies on the effects of human milk on the recipient preterm infant. Dr. Schanler is a member of the American Pediatric Society, Society for Pediatric Research, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a former President of both the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation. He is the 2020 recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics Samuel J. Fomon Nutrition Award.
