Dimitar (Dimiter) Avtanski is a Director of the Endocrine Research Laboratory at Friedman Diabetes Institute of Lenox Hill Hospital, Professor of Medicine at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and Investigator at the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. He received a MSc degree in Biology and Chemistry from Sofia University in Bulgaria and a PhD degree from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Beth Israel Medical Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Avtanski specialized at the Institute of Anatomy at Leipzig University in Germany and completed seven years of post-doctoral fellowships at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. His research focuses on the intersection of obesity, diabetes, carcinogenesis, and steroidogenesis. Dr. Avtanski serves as Associate Editor for the BMC Springer Nature journals Molecular Medicine, BMC Endocrine Disorders, and Discover Oncology and holds guest editor and editorial board positions at multiple journals. Dr. Avtanski is a research mentor of rotating fellows from Lenox Hill Hospital, Hofstra University, and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
